FIVE TIPS TO EASE THE ‘SUMMER TO SCHOOL’ TRANSITION

Transitioning from the lazy days of summer to a new grade or school could be a tough task for kids and their parents alike. That’s why Vielka McFarlane, a veteran educator and founder of The Celerity Educational Group, a group of charter schools in South Central Los Angeles, is sharing essential tips on how parents can help keep kids’ minds active during the summer months and prepare them for a new school year.

1) Sharpen Their Skills - “You have to provide them with choices and opportunities to expand on the classroom knowledge they gained during the year,” she explains, “keeping their minds active with strategic games like Chess, building activities, cooking, and arts and crafts.” This is also a way to sharpen their senses!

2) Stay Social – “Whether you’re at the beach, playing in your yard or the local pool, make sure your children remain social with their peers.”

3) Incorporating The Arts
– Introduce your children to the arts through concerts, plays and museums that are outside their normal boundaries “This will open them up to new experiences and expand their horizons,” explains McFarlane.

4) Prepare Them and Put Them at Ease – As those last few weeks of summer wind down, many children get anxious about what to expect with a new grade, classmates and teachers. Keep the lines of communication open between you and your child by discussing his or her expectations.

5) Keep A Routine
– Towards the end of the summer, try to keep your kids on a routine or schedule that will allow them to ease their way into the first few weeks of school. This means their days should consist of regular bedtimes and meal times allowing them to prepare their bodies and minds for the school day.

These are some great tips on how to motivate and stimulate your child’s mind and body so they can continue to grow through the summer months.
